Designed For:

Elementary Students

Overview

This project will allow students to see how a helix can increase the mixing of two fluids by showing a color change of the end product. We will discuss what a mixture is, what a solution is, and what microfluidics is. We will take data on the color change of the fluid based on the helix number. Perhaps we will use a temperature variable to see if temperature has any effect on the color of the fluids, just as it did this summer with the gold nanoparticles.

After completing this module, student should be able to:

  • Students will know the difference between a mixture and a solution.
  • Students will be exposed to what microfluidics is and how it plays a part in mixing two fluids.
  • Students will be able to take data to determine the best helix for mixing.
  • Students will predict how many helix turns mix solutions better.
